Current Events Week 20

Doctors all across the country are looking for flu vaccines as the flu was officially declared an epidemic after infecting the required amount of people. Many places are low or out of vaccines because it is January and many people get their shots in the fall or winter so most places did not order more shots. So far about 30 people have been confirmed dead from the flu. I think that if you dont have your vaccine for this year yet then you should stay away from people as much as possible because many people are dying and it can be very dangerous.

Current Events Week 19

A man on flight into JFK in New York City on a flight from Iceland was duct taped to his seat by crew and other passengers after yelling, screaming and hitting other passengers after drinking several bottles of duty free hard liquor. The passengers held him down and taped him as he was yelling about the plane crashing and burning. He was taken by police to a hospital but police say no charges are going to be filed as of now. I think the passengers and crew did the right thing by taping the man down because he clearly could not control himself and he was a threat to everyone on the plane by his behavior. I also expect that this man will probably sue the airline for his treatment even though i think he needed to be taped down.

#6 Setting Award Limits for Medical Malpractice Suits

Affirmative: An award limit in malpractice cases is needed because unrestricted awards are causing doctors to leave their profession or go to states with a limit because of the fear that one mistake can cost them everything and they don't want to risk it. This is making it harder for people to get good treatment because wait times are longer and people may have to travel farther. If there is an award limit then doctors will not be punished unfairly for sometimes small mistakes. Also people should be aware when getting surgery that there is always the possibility of something going wrong.Having a cap in place will provide lower costs to doctors because their insurance premiums will be lower so they can charge less.

Negative: There should be no awards limit because not every mistake is equal and while some mistakes may be minor and not have a big impact on the victims life, some forms of malpractice can be life threatening. If there is a limit then people will not be awarded the proper amount for there suffering. Also since no malpractice suit is the same we have no idea of what can happen in the future. Another reason is that doctors can be held responsible for making sometimes permanent mistakes and will eventually mean that health care will be better for everybody.

Current Events Week 18

A 6 year old boy in Maryland was recently suspended for pointing his finger at another student and saying "pow" as if he was shooting her. The school says it doesn't want anything to do with guns or shootings at their school and that is why they suspended him. The school says that he was also suspended because he has been  warned about doing things like this before. The parents say that this was just a reaction to recent shootings and that at the most is worth a detention. I don't think kids should be doing things like this but i feel the school overreacted and the school should just have a teacher explain to him that it is wrong.

Court_carry.jpg

Gun rights are one of the hottest topics this year is gun control and gun rights, especially after recent shootings in Connecticut. Many people believe that guns should be banned while many others believe that guns are important forms of protection and are needed to be safe. This is a very controversial subject in Washington and around the nation especially in high population states like California and New York. But the answer will come soon since the Supreme Court will make a decision on the right to carry a concealed weapon in public. Defenders of the right to carry a weapon say that carrying a gun is important for personal safety when the police cant get there in time. Those who say guns should be banned say that guns are the reasons for crimes like school shootings and murders. I don't think gun control should happen and i dont think it would work since we have gun control in Los Angeles and New York and they have very high murder rates. I think that people cant expect the police to protect them all the time and when your life is at risk and there are no cops nearby, i would want to have a gun to protect myself.

George Zimmerman, the man who earlier this year who became known for shooting Travon Martin in February when Zimmerman was patrolling a neighborhood as a watch captain. Martin had what was believed to be a gun when he was believed to robbing a store, Zimmerman approached Martin and was attacked, during the attack Zimmerman shot and killed martin. Zimmerman is Suing NBC for defamation for portraying him as a murderer before he was arrested or even tried. He is also suing NBC because they altered a recording of what happened in order to make him look guilty. They also edited pictures that showed Zimmerman covered in his own blood. I think NBC is wrong because they should just report the facts as they are no matter who it hurts or harms and let people make their own decisions on what they think of someone.

Current Events Week 15

The United Nations is attempting to create a law where the internet can be censored by governments and tracked as well. The law would also bring up the idea of charging .com sites every time someone used their site which means that every time someone uses Google or yahoo to search the website would have to pay for every search. This proposal was introduced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is calling for "global control over all internet exchanges".The United States Ambassador, Terry Kramer said he is doing every thing he can to oppose the law which is still very far away from being put into effect since it has just been introduced and will not affect anyone for a while.
